I’m looking forward to stepping up my passion at the OLA 2010 Super Conference this week.  Here’s my quasi-final schedule. (Because nothing is final when it comes to conference session selection, until 5 minutes before start time!)

library-related conferences

February 17, 2010

Looking to attend a conference in 2010? Take a look at the Library Related Conferences website. Maintained by Marian Dworaczek from the University of Saskatchewan Library, this exhaustive list of library conferences is updated to 2013, and includes numerous international conferences.

I’m officially registered for the 2010 Ontario Library Association Super Conference.

The theme of the conference is: Imagine. Inspire. Make a Difference.

‘Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.’ ~ Howard Thurman

What inspires me? … mobile libraries, digital strategies, collaboration tools, web design, and embracing web 2.0.

If you plan on attending, be sure to take advantage of the online conference planning tool. Here’s my preliminary conference schedule.

Want to follow the conference on Twitter? Tweet: watch for or use tag #sc10

Register soon … fees go up December 23rd. Step up your passion!

Looking for some library related conferences to attend?

Marian Dworaczek from the University of Saskatchewan does an amazing job of compiling a website of Library Related Conferences. Conferences to the year 2015 are linked on the page.

Awesome job, Marian!

Presentation handouts from the Special Libraries Association 2008 conference are now available. Handouts can be searched by date, SLA Division, program title, or presenter last name.

I had the opportunity to attend the OLA Super Conference recently. One of the sessions I attended was “Moving Your Library to 2.0 and Beyond”, with Amanda Etches-Johnson (McMaster University), Gail Richardson, and Beckie MacDonald (Oakville Public Library). The session examined how both libraries followed the lead of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library in implementing Learning 2.0.

Helene Blowers at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library created the original Learning 2.0 Program — “a discovery learning program designed to encourage staff to explore new technologies and reward them for doing 23 Things.”

Both Oakville Public Library and McMaster University Library made social software skills a core compentency for their staff. They adopted the Learning 2.0 training program to get their libraries “moving beyond 2.0”. The speakers presented *12 Things* you can do to get your library moving beyond library 2.0.

The key *12 Things* to implementing a Learning 2.0 program in your organization or institution [lessons learned] are:

1. know your culture, staff and users
2. get buy-in from your executives and directors
3. determine your budget
4. get buy-in from your management team
5. start the buzz and pay attention to timing (is there ever a right time to deliver a learning program?)
6. poll your staff (if appropriate) for needs and interest
7. determine the scope of the learning program
8. which web 2.0 tools and core competencies will be covered in the program?
9. determine the parameters — is the program mandatory or voluntary for staff?
10. training delivery – the 5Ws – who, what, where, when, why
11. offer incentives, acknowledgement, or rewards
12. request feedback and post training communication

Helene Blowers, the creator of 23 Things / Learning 2.0, maintains a great list of libraries that have implemented Learning 2.0 here.

Looking for more resources? Stephen Abram does a nice job of compiling them here.

OLA Super Conference 2008

February 2, 2008

I had an awesome time at the OLA Super Conference! I met up with some old friends, explorered the vendor expo, and attended some amazing sessions.

The plenary sessions were superb — I’m embracing “good SLOW” 😉

I walked away with a long list of sites to explore, books to read, great ideas, and one very dogeared conference programme!
