I’m looking forward to the OLA Super Conference. This year’s theme is, “you live, you learn”. This will be my fifth conference, and I’m sure it won’t disappoint. I always walk away inspired (and sometimes envious!) by all the amazing things happening in other libraries.

I had the opportunity to attend the OLA Super Conference recently. One of the sessions I attended was “Moving Your Library to 2.0 and Beyond”, with Amanda Etches-Johnson (McMaster University), Gail Richardson, and Beckie MacDonald (Oakville Public Library). The session examined how both libraries followed the lead of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library in implementing Learning 2.0.
Helene Blowers at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library created the original Learning 2.0 Program — “a discovery learning program designed to encourage staff to explore new technologies and reward them for doing 23 Things.”
Both Oakville Public Library and McMaster University Library made social software skills a core compentency for their staff. They adopted the Learning 2.0 training program to get their libraries “moving beyond 2.0”. The speakers presented *12 Things* you can do to get your library moving beyond library 2.0.
The key *12 Things* to implementing a Learning 2.0 program in your organization or institution [lessons learned] are:
1. know your culture, staff and users
2. get buy-in from your executives and directors
3. determine your budget
4. get buy-in from your management team
5. start the buzz and pay attention to timing (is there ever a right time to deliver a learning program?)
6. poll your staff (if appropriate) for needs and interest
7. determine the scope of the learning program
8. which web 2.0 tools and core competencies will be covered in the program?
9. determine the parameters — is the program mandatory or voluntary for staff?
10. training delivery – the 5Ws – who, what, where, when, why
11. offer incentives, acknowledgement, or rewards
12. request feedback and post training communication
